The history of my quilt…
In the 1990s, when Piece O’ Cake was in its early days, my Mom volunteered to make these blocks for me. Years passed. I forgot about them but every now and then Mom would get another block appliqued.
When she moved to Texas a few years ago, Mom gave me the blocks, both finished and not. I found the blocks on the weekend of July 4th, 2014, and chose the blocks that I liked the best to make thisĀ quilt.
Mom was new to applique and her blocks were not all the same size; some stars had moved out of position. I addedĀ sashing so that I could trim blocksĀ to the same size. (Look close andĀ you’ll see that my sashing widths vary from block to block.)
The sashing began as a solution to a problem but it turned into an important design element. The sashing strips add definition to the blocks and an accent color.Ā
This quilt will always remind me of my Mom and the 4th of July. I hope that your quilt will have a special meaning for you as well!
